The MIT bitcoin Club, a passionate coalition of students, alumni, researchers and community members, presents the twelfth annual exposure of Mitcoin (April 5–6, 2025), a historical event that explores how bitcoin and Freedom Technologies empower people around the world. With only 5 remaining days, this initiative led by students continues its tradition of a decade of unite academy, activism and technical innovation.
Why does this matter
Born from the MIT 2014 bitcoin Project, which distributed bitcoin to university students to study adoption, the Expo has become a critical forum for dialogue focused on sovereignty. This year's freedom agenda technology focuses on physical liberation through technology.
Speakers such as Zimbabwe Evan Mawarire activist (#Thisflag movement leader) and the creator of the Tadge Dryja Network will dissect bitcoin's role in resisting authoritarian control and allowing the escape of the real world of oppression. It is not about cryptonomy, or meme coins. It is about life, freedom and bitcoin.
What to wait
Day 1: immerse yourself in the foundations of Freedom tech with the key note of Mawarire “Why Freedom tech imports” and Dryja's analysis of bitcoin's resistance against states-nation. Corporate adoption occupies the center of the stage with Paul Giordano de Digital Marathon and Central bitcoin developers such as Gloria Zhao. Get more technical in the afternoon with topics such as consensus cleaning, poisoning attacks, censorship resistance, bitcoin pipes, etc.
Day 2: Change to the global impact with Mauricio Bartolomeo (exfiltration through bitcoin) and panels with activists from Venezuela, Russia and Togo. The deep technical immersions include Neha Narula de Mit on the Self -Custody escalation and Steven Roose Softfork Covenant's proposals. Other issues include Future of Freedom tech, Quantum resistance, Covenant Soft Fork, Tor Project, etc.
BEYOND THEORY: THE FREEDOM TECHATHON
Executing parallel (April 4–6), this $ 10,000 event imposes developers to build tools for privacy, resistance to censorship and financial sovereignty14. The past projects have obtained funds from industry leaders, proof of the spirit of “mind and hand” of MIT in Action4.
In addition, Anna Chekhovich of the HRF will execute a workshop in bitcoin Efustody 101.
Why attend?
This event prioritizes the substance on the show. Tickets are still accessible, speakers present pro bono and discussions address pressing questions:
– How can bitcoin allow the physical escape of authoritarian regimes?
-What technical updates strengthen your properties against censorship?
– Can bitcoin adopt corporations without compromising their spirit?
With more than 40 speakers and more than 500 expected attendees, the Expo offers incomparable networks with developers, activists and academics that shape bitcoin's future.
