Samsung, the Korean electronics company, has revealed that it is working to build its own metaverse and extended reality headsets, hinting at the possibility of a VR headset launching in the near future. TM Roh, Samsung’s head of mobile experience business, said the device will be built in partnership with Google and Qualcomm.
Samsung will enter the Metaverse hardware business
Samsung, the Korean mobile phone company, revealed It will soon join the metaverse and VR (virtual reality) headset market. The company announced that it is already working on what it calls “extended reality” hardware, hinting at the production of a VR headset.
TM Roh, head of Samsung’s mobile experiences business, confirmed that such a device is in the works, but did not offer a release window for the hardware. However, he reported the participation of Qualcomm, the factory-free chipmaker, and Google, as partners. On February 1, Roh told The Washington Post:
Many different companies… have been making these announcements about different realities, so we’ve also been making similar preparations, no less than anyone else.
Ro explained that Samsung had delayed its market share, stating that the market was not ready yet and that other similar devices launched by competitors were not as successful as expected.
More virtual reality devices
Samsung joins the ranks of manufacturers that have already launched metaverse devices, such as Meta and HTC, and others that are planning to do so in the near future, such as Apple. Ro said that Samsung’s new device will be powered by a Qualcomm chip specially designed to work better in virtual reality applications and will use an operating system powered by Google.
Samsung’s determination to jump into what is shaping up to be a crowded market could respond to a push to expand from traditional smartphones to something else. Nokia, another phone technology company, predicted that metaverse technology will replace smartphones in the second half of this decade.
In opposition, however, Ro believes that this new family of devices does not pose any danger to what smartphones offer today. He stated:
Smartphones will continue to develop the features and needs of consumers and bring even more new experiences.
For Roh, there may be a metaverse and smartphone integration to complement his experiences and build further from there. Samsung’s involvement with the metaverse is not new, as the company has already made several investments in projects in the area.
