Optimism, Ethereum’s scaling network, which operates as a Layer Two (L2) network, announced plans to upgrade its network in March. The update, dubbed “Bedrock,” aims to increase transfer speeds, lower fees, and improve compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). The Optimism Foundation stated in their proposal: “The Bedrock upgrade is an important step toward a multi-chain future.”
Optimism’s Bedrock Update: Optimizing Transfer Rates and Improving Node Performance
Optimism, the L2 Ethereum scaling solution, plans to update their network in mid-March 2023 with a new rule set change called Bedrock. On February 1, 2023, the Optimism Foundation tweeted about the proposal, stating, “The Optimism Foundation has proposed the first protocol update for Optimism Collective: Bedrock.” In another tweet, the official Optimism Twitter account expressed excitement about submitting the proposal to Token House. The tweet of optimism add:
We see Bedrock as the culmination of years of research and development, and the crucial next step toward a high-performance, simplified, modular multi-chain future.
The Optimism Foundation’s update proposal details the first official release of the OP stack, a set of modular components that drive Optimism. Bedrock aims to improve transfer rates through optimized data compression, reduce deposit times by handling L1 reorganizations more efficiently, enable modular test systems, and improve node performance. The proposal highlights that Bedrock aims to maintain close compatibility with Ethereum.
The Bedrock update, the first official release of the OP Stack, will support Ethereum-centric design principles such as EIP-1559 and modularity. According to the Optimism Twitter account, the update is expected to take approximately 4 hours and will not require a “regenesis”. Optimism end users do not need to take any action and the chain’s historical data will remain accessible after the upgrade. Goerli’s testnet for Optimism has already been successfully upgraded to Bedrock without any major issues, according to the Optimism developers.
