Earlier this year, the Energy Information Administration attempted to conduct a survey of bitcoin mining energy use under emergency authorization statutes, circumventing the traditional process of instituting a survey that required an open comment period from the public and industry players subject to the survey.
This attempted survey was conducted under highly dubious circumstances and with very weak reasoning to justify its emergency nature. Riot Platforms and the Texas Blockchain Council filed a lawsuit seeking an injunction against the survey in Waco, Texas.
In the final agreement, the EIA voluntarily agreed to end data collection in the context of the emergency and to destroy all information it had received up to the time of the court ruling.
A new notice was issued following the normal procedure for an open comment period.
Today from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Central Time, the EIA will host a webinar to discuss issues related to energy use in bitcoin mining and information associated with mining site operations in the United States.
People can register here to view the webinar, and there is a form to submit questions during the registration process that will hopefully be addressed during the webinar.
I would like to ask you, as I have done in previous coverage of the agency's actions related to this space, that if you attend and send a question, please be respectful and serious in your participation.
