On March 11, 2025, representative Rost Khanna gave a brief but shocking talk at the bitcoin for America of bitcoin Policy Institute.
“bitcoin is a transformative for many people around the world,” said Khanna representative at the summit. “That is why the Democratic Party should accept it as something that can create financial empowerment for people not only in the United States, but throughout the world.”
This is the type of message that has been spreading for years, and has urged his fellow Democrats to follow his example. He has implored them that they are not afraid of bitcoin, but that they see it as they see other important technological advances of our time, including the Internet itself.
“My goal is to make bitcoin bipartisan,” Khanna representative told bitcoin magazine. “I want to convince the Democrats that bitcoin is a next -generation value store that millions of people use around the world and that the United States that shows leadership in it allows us to connect with these people, often some of the most private of their rights.”
For a party that often advocates financial inclusion, it seems almost ironic that many Democrats have seen beyond bitcoin, an open source technology that anyone can use with nothing more than an internet connection (and, in some cases, even <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/digital-assets/2023/03/15/how-africans-are-using-bitcoin-without-internet-access/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Without one).
That said, the representative Khanna said that, although it remains one of the few most vocal democrats when it comes to being pro –bitcoin, the number of Democratic politicians who have declared that they are in favor of technology has increased substantially in recent years.
“We went from only 10 of us more or less supporting bitcoin and crypto to almost 70 or 80,” said representative Khanna. “It is happening slowly.”
And although some have been attributed to the historical position of most Democrats in bitcoin, representative Khanna states that the problem is more a lack of understanding of the purpose and cases of use of technology.
“Some Democratic politicians are not aware of how useful bitcoin can be with remittances or how they can be used by those who do not have access to US dollars,” said the congressman. “Many people around the world use it for both reasons,” he added, referring to the idea that many, including some Democrats, may not be aware of this fact.
The bitcoin and crypto voting block in the United States Swing States
According <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/coinbase/status/1846218132261585254″ target=”_blank”>Coinbase researchIn each of the swing states in the most recent presidential elections in the United States, there were approximately 10 times the number of cryptography holders compared to the vote differential between Biden and Trump in 2020.
Harris lost to Trump in each of these swing states, leaving some speculate that the participation of the bitcoin and crypto voting block may have been one of the main forces that influenced the elections in favor of Trump.
While representative Khanna does not know to what extent this voting block hit the results of the elections, he agreed that it was probably one of the many important factors that affected the result of the elections.
“I think it made the difference,” said the congressman. “In such a close choice, everything is important, and the fact that there were some Democrats who offended bitcoin and crypto voters was not useful.”
And the Khanna representative is not alone to recognize this.
In December 2024, in the New York Times Dealbook Summit, Van Jones – Political Analyst, Media personality and prominent voice within the Democratic Party – fixed which was to the detriment of the Democratic Party that excluded Pro-bitcoin and Pro-crypto voters.
The representative Khanna sang the praises of Jones and said that we should hear more voices such as Jones within the Democratic Party that speaks in favor of bitcoin in the near future.
“I have a lot of respect for Van Jones,” said representative Khanna.
“Some time passed in the bay area, so he gets technology. The party will move in a direction that will adopt bitcoin and other technologies,” he added.
Does the hug of President Trump of bitcoin dissuade the Democrats to support him?
While it only seems logical that the Democratic Party would reverse its position on bitcoin if it seeks to collect seats in the camera and the Senate in the mid -period elections 2026, at the same time it seems difficult to imagine more Democrats in support of bitcoin given the highly partisan political climate in the United States coupled with the fact that the fact that Trump is a bitcoin bitcoin bitcoin.
The representative Khanna argued that the Democrats should not think about the lines of the party when it comes to bitcoin, but to evaluate the technology based solely on what it is.
“Politicians are able to evaluate bitcoin in their merits,” said representative Khanna.
“bitcoin is just a decentralized digital currency that allows peer transactions without the need for an intermediary. People just need to study bitcoin and learn that it is only a means of exchange,” he added.
The representative Khanna also took a moment to differentiate between bitcoin and Meme coins, highlighting the fact that the recently launched currency of the President ($ Trump) creates a lot of confusion regarding the proposal of value of cryptographic assets, including bitcoin.
“We should not have chosen officials such as President Trump who launched meme coins,” said the congressman.
Get democrats on the right side of the story
At a time when many US citizens are struggling to reach the end of the month, should bitcoin be a problem of the front and the center for the Democrats, once widely considered as the political party of the medium and the working class?
The Khanna representative does not necessarily think about it, but does not believe that the party continues with technology.
“There are much bigger problems at this time such as the cuts in Medicaid, the dismissal of veterans and the erratic policy of tariffs,” said the congressman.
“But the Democrats were on the wrong side of the problems of innovation and bitcoin in 2022 and 2024, and now we have the opportunity to climb to the right side,” he added.
So how can Democratic voters in favor of bitcoin help their party be the right side of history when it comes to bitcoin?
The Khanna representative had some suggestions:
“They should point to those of us that we lead in bitcoin and crypto,” he said.
“They can encourage government members to study the issue, so they are not uninformed,” he added.
“And they should talk about the enormous adoption of bitcoin.”
