Colombian courts held one of the first judicial hearings using metaverse technology. María Victoria Quiñones Triana, magistrate of the Magdalena court, approved the holding of this hearing, using the Horizon Worlds technology provided by Meta and virtual avatars to represent the participants in the process.
Colombian court holds metaversal judicial hearings
A Colombian court has ostensibly made history by holding one of the country’s first legal proceedings in the metaverse. He audience, carried out on February 15 and promoted by María Victoria Quiñones Triana, magistrate of the Magdalena court, used Horizon Worlds technology, provided by Meta, to simulate a unified virtual space. The court used several avatars to represent each of the participants in the complaint.
Quiñones, who affirmed that verifying the true identity of the attendees was one of the key processes in the metaverse, used verification numbers sent to emails registered in the name of each of those involved, as proof of identity. On the importance of this technology for the State Judiciary, Quiñones stated:
The metaverse constitutes a technological tool that can facilitate access to the administration of justice. The use of information technologies in the development of judicial processes has the essential purpose of facilitating and streamlining these processes.
Limitations and criticisms
While the hearing went smoothly, the 2,500 citizens who watched the public hearing on Youtube had differing views on the use of the metaverse in these types of proceedings. Although the action was supported by the majority of users, others claimed that this type of hearing did not present any advantage compared to video hearings. Another point cited against this type of virtual process involves the inability to analyze the psychological traits of the participants due to the participation of metaverse avatars instead of actual video.
One user requested that metaverse hearings be used more frequently, due to the advantages they have over regular hearings in terms of transporting citizens who may live far from the courts.
Responding to these comments, Quiñones stated:
We understand the constructive criticism that has been made about the deficiencies that we have or do not have in the Judiciary, but we are here with all the spirit of giving support so that this process can move forward.
Metaverse is also currently being used to make industrial processes more efficient and to display and sell automobiles, among other implementations.
