Small but significant progress is underway in bitcoin's much-debated decentralized consensus process, with some developers moving to publicly gauge sentiment over conflicting soft fork proposals that would augment the software ruleset.
More specifically, the effort began today with the creation of a page on the bitcoin Wiki website called “<a target="_blank" href="https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Covenants_support”>Agreement support”, where the network's pseudonymous developers can attest to their interest in none other than <a target="_blank" href="https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Covenants_support”>nine proposalswith a six-option grading system.
The effort is not affiliated with bitcoin Core, the network's main software implementation.
It is notable, however, as the process has been evoked in previous bitcoin consensus updates, dating back to the first soft fork, P2SH. <a target="_blank" href="https://en.bitcoin.it/w/index.php?title=P2SH_Votes&oldid=23259″>in 2012and continuing the legendary Fork Wars, with <a target="_blank" href="https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Segwit_support”>SegWitthe most controversial change to date, as both have dedicated Wiki pages.
Covenants, a method of restricting the spending conditions of specific UTXOs, have been gaining popularity since 2021, with the introduction of OP_CTV, written by developer Jeremy Rubin, although opinions differed at the time on the soundness of the proposal and its promotion.
Among those being evaluated based on developer sentiment are OP_VAULT, a convention scheme aimed more specifically at escrow, and OP_CAT, an alteration that would bring back Satoshi-era capabilities, such as the ability to perform complex code queries.
Already voicing their opinions is Luke Dashjr, one of the network's oldest contributors, along with new entrants like Jon Attack, Brandon Black, and MoonSettler.
If the effort gains traction, the page could become something to watch.
The bitcoin governance process, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/LynAldenContact/status/1854606667213603208″>although highly debated
Still, the move is indicative of a general interest among the development community in moving forward with code updates that improve bitcoin for users, although there will likely continue to be debate over the preferred update, as well as the activation method that would enable it.
