Spotify users who don't pay a subscription can once again see the lyrics of the songs they listen to on the service. In May, the company began A broader deployment Spotify has been running a test that required a paid subscription to view lyrics for any song. Free users could follow lyrics, but only for three songs per month. Now, Spotify is removing the restriction so that free users can view as many lyrics as they need with no viewing limit.
“At Spotify, we're always testing and updating. This means the availability of our features may vary by tiers and between markets and devices,” a Spotify spokesperson told Engadget. “In the coming weeks, we'll be expanding the availability of lyrics to Spotify Free users so more people can enjoy seeing more lyrics, globally.”
Unsurprisingly, the initial move to limit access to song lyrics for free users generated a backlash earlier this year. Perhaps Spotify thought doing so was a way to push people into its revised subscription tiers that start at $11 a month for music streaming. CEO Daniel Ek explained during the company's press conference latest earnings conference call Plans were put in place this month to improve what is offered to free users. It seems that the list of updates included regaining full access to lyrics.
“We are prioritizing improvements to our free product lineup based on current performance in certain markets,” Ek said at the conference. “More improvements to our free experience will be coming in the coming months.”
