“Deadpool & Wolverine” set a box office record for an R-rated film this weekend, debuting with an estimated $205 million in North America, according to studio data compiled by research firm Comscore.
Made by Walt Disney (New York Stock Exchange: DIS) twentyHe Studies of the century and Marvel Studios, the superhero film is on track to top $438.3 million in its worldwide debut. The first “Deadpool” held the previous record for an R-rated debut with $132 million.
Among the top-grossing films in their opening weekends in the U.S., “Deadpool & Wolverine” is in eighth place, sandwiched between “The Avengers” ($207.4 million) and “Black Panther” ($202 million). It knocked “Avengers: Age of Ultron” ($191.3 million) out of the top 10.
The opening is the biggest of the year, beating Disney and Pixar's (DIS) animated sequel “Inside Out 2” ($154.2 million). It also topped last year's smash hit “Barbie,” which debuted with $162 million in box office sales.
The No. 1 domestic opening of all time went to “Avengers: Endgame” with $357.1 million, followed by “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($260.1 million), “Avengers: Infinity War” ($257.6 million), “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($247.9 million) and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” ($220 million).
After “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the Universal film (NASDAQ:CMCSA) “Twisters” grossed $35.3 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $154.9 million. Universal (CMCSA) also took third place with “Despicable Me 4,” which added $14.2 million in its fourth weekend to bring its domestic total to nearly $291 million.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final nationwide figures will be released Monday.
