Makerdao co-founder’s climate change initiative finds mixed reactions
TO recent Makerdao Maker Improvement Proposal (MIP) from co-founder Rune Christensen proposes to use 20,000 manufacturer (MKR) tokens to finance a Scientific Sustainability Fund. According to Christensen, “Scientific sustainability is a central tenet of the Maker Constitution that recognizes the unique critical relationship between financial infrastructure and the global environmental risks of climate change.” This statement was made in a Makerdao forum post.
Christensen is a staunch climate change activist who wants the fund to combat “misinformation about energy solutions that have demonstrated a real-life track record of achieving scalable decarbonization.” At the time of writing, 20,000 manufacturer (MKR) tokens is roughly around $14 million using today’s exchange rates.
Although Christensen believes the science of climate change is settled, there are still those who deny its existence and many people insist that “there is no climatic disaster”. Some cryptocurrency advocates have scoffed at Christensen’s plan, with one vocation the “garbage” proposal and its defenders “thieves destroying value for MSEK Headlines.” another individual disputed the use of a stablecoin project to combat climate change.
A person commented that “it seems Rune has become fully effective in altruism”, referring to the movement promoted by former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried. In response to this comment, another asked“Why don’t you use your own money instead of MSEK treasury?” While some people appreciated Idea of Christensen, others recommended for Makerdao to partner with Klimadao, a climate finance project.
