Ronin today introduced Ronin zkEVM, a new zero-knowledge Layer 2 blockchain developed using a customized version of the Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK). According to the announcement, Ronin zkEVM promises to significantly scale network capacity and accommodate a growing user base, driving the growth of its partner game studios and improving the permissionless nature of the ecosystem for a broader range of experiences. of game.
The Ronin network, originally designed to support Sky Mavis' flagship game Axie Infinity, now serves a broader range of gaming applications, with 1.4 million daily active addresses. The introduction of Ronin zkEVM will drive this expansion, providing partner studios with the tools to innovate and reach broader audiences.
Trung Nguyen, CEO and co-founder of Sky Mavis, said the company's key goal is to build a unified gaming ecosystem aimed at facilitating asset transfers and token exchanges between different layers.
“By removing block space as a limitation, we believe Ronin zkEVM is a crucial pillar in helping us onboard billions of players. Supported by Polygon's best-in-class ZK technology stack, this collaboration between two ecosystems will usher in a new era of Web3 gaming. Our ultimate vision is to become the platform where the next billion people will create their first crypto wallet, and we believe that more games will be the gateway to achieving this milestone.”
Jeff Zirlin, co-founder and chief growth officer at Sky Mavis, shared with crypto Briefing that game studios already deployed on the Ronin mainnet will be able to choose to deploy an application-specific blockchain, called an appchain. This means that his game would have a dedicated blockchain.
In particular, Zirlin recognized the challenge of fragmented ecosystems that could become real with the implementation of Ronin zkEVM.
“If each game, decentralized exchange, and Ronin protocol were to launch their own rollup, we could see liquidity spread too thin. That would result in high slippage fees during swaps, which goes against our vision of a scalable ecosystem,” explained the Sky Mavis co-founder.
To address this potential issue, existing decentralized applications on Ronin will receive updates, such as Katana DEX and Mavis Market. Zirlin notes that these applications can facilitate the connection between multiple rollups, especially after the introduction of a cross-chain relay service, which is already in the works.
Users could therefore seamlessly transfer and exchange tokens while interacting with any Ronin ecosystem chain, and buy and sell nfts on any Ronin ecosystem chain through Mavis Market.
“For example, imagine a user wants to exchange 10 AXS on zkEVM chain #1 for 20 RON on zkEVM chain #2. They could initiate a single transaction and the Cross-Chain Relayer service will facilitate the rest of the process without issues”.
Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon and chief business officer of Polygon Labs, also commented on the collaboration, highlighting Ronin's role in combining advanced technology with significant distribution and user engagement capabilities. Polygon CDK is expected to transform the Ronin gaming ecosystem into a premier destination for game studios around the world.
