After weeks of consideration, Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) publishers have decided to remove the proposed changes to rule out spin-off NFT projects. However, the decision seems forced as they faced a lot of backlash from the board game community.
On January 13, Wizards of the Coast, the entity behind D&D, announced that it intended to amend the legal framework that has allowed content creators to produce D&D-compatible content for the past 20 years.
The entity offered three reasons why they intended to modify the Open Game License (OGL). One of them was to target Web3 developers. “We wanted to target those trying to use D&D in Web3, blockchain games, and NFTs.”
This would prevent creators from profiting from creating derivative Web3 content, such as NFTs. But this didn’t sit well with the fans and content creators who made their voices heard online. More than 15,000 people took the d&d survey on the subject, and an overwhelming majority supported the creative commons license, which frees content for any use.
Based on the comments, the entity has decided to abandon its plan to update its OGL. Also, D&D content would be placed under your System Reference Document under a Creative Commons license which will be “open and irrevocable”.
Dungeons & Dragons publishers made their intentions clear in 2022
Wizard of the Coast initially made its intentions to update the longstanding OGL last year. Until that time, fans and other entities could create and sell derivative works inspired by board games. However, to protect their intellectual property from being exploited by large companies and third parties to coin D&D-inspired NFTs, they felt the need to update their Open Game License.
In a blog post last December, the entity made it clear that the “OGL needs an update to make sure it continues to do what it was meant to do: allow independent creators in the D&D community to build, play, and grow the game we all love, while not allowing things like third parties to accumulate D&D NFTs. and large companies. to exploit our intellectual property.”
