The little console that could, Playdate, is having its first site-wide game sale, as do its more established rivals. Manufacturer Panic is holding the sale to celebrate the first anniversary of the online store, which is officially called Playdate Catalog.
The discounts are worth mentioning. If you have a Playdate, you'll find plenty of things here to like. The cute little synth app game creator is on sale for $8, down from $15, and the action RPG under the castle is on sale for $7, which is a 30 percent discount. Many titles go much lower than this. The strange unicycle/coffee procurement simulator A balanced beer is on sale for only $2 and the Adventure-esque dungeon crawler Keyboard It's only one dollar.
One of Playdate's key selling points is its abundance of indie games that you can't play anywhere else, which this offer shows in spades. However, one big game is missing from the sale. Luke Pope Mars after midnight It doesn't come out until March 12, although the sale lasts until March 14, so maybe we'll get a first-day discount.
For the uninitiated, the Playdate is a retro-style handheld console that looks like Nintendo's original Game Boy. It is bright yellow in color and features a unique control mechanism in the form of a hand crank. This crank is used in novel ways, such as keeping the unicycle balanced in the aforementioned mode. A balanced beer. It's a trick, but fun.
Beyond the sale, new Playdate owners get 24 free games when purchasing the $200 console. These are unlocked week by week for 12 weeks. Technically, the console has been available for almost two years, but there was an obscene waiting period while Panic worked to fulfill initial pre-orders. That no longer exists, so orders ship within a few days.
