2023 was an interesting year. We have spent decades watching how the world of technology has gone through different cycles and had an impact on our society and economy, and now many of us are eager to know what the future will look like.
With everything that happened in 2023, there was one event that shook the entire world and was the definitive breakthrough in ai: ChatGPT.
It changed many things. How people worked. How you are improving employees' daily workflow. Information about ai capabilities. As well as the ethical implications it has.
In the new O'Reilly technology trends report for 2024written by Mike Loukides: We'll learn what to expect in 2024 and beyond by learning about the use of O'Reilly learning platforms and what it tells us about where the industry is headed.
So what are the technology trends for 2024?
In 2023, there was a decline in software development as a whole, from industry awareness to a decline in jobs. Although this is what the data shows, software development is still very important and its need with the ai movement remains unchanged.
Generative ai is a big factor and 92% of developers use ai for low-level coding. It raises the question about the potential of using ai in high-level designs, putting emphasis on how humans collaborate with future-generation ai systems. This shows us the importance of change in software development to master an architecture that is more suitable for complex, data-intensive environments.
Some statistics of the O'Reilly Report:
- 3.9% drop in interest in software architecture
- 8.9% increase in interest in enterprise architecture
- 9.8% increase in interest in functional programming
- 40% increase in event-driven architecture for design systems that process data from multiple streams
As generative ai tools help many developers with their daily tasks such as coding tasks, we are naturally seeing a decline in content usage from most programming languages. This has led to a decline in the number of people wishing to follow the traditional learning and professional development path. There has been a decrease in Stack Overflow questions and also GitHub pull requests, suggesting that developers have stopped seeking advice from other developers and are relying solely on generative ai.
Some statistics of the O'Reilly Report:
- 92% of programmers leverage generative ai for coding tasks
- Python is still the most popular language
- C++ and Rust are increasing in growth due to their relevance in domains such as embedded systems and memory-safe programming.
When we talk about ai today, the focus is on the GPT family. ChatGPT was launched in November 2022 and has been in the spotlight ever since. That said, more industries and organizations have a broader interest in natural language processing (NLP) and generative ai models like Transformers. There has also been a change in tool usage and Pytorch has become more popular than TensorFlow.
Some statistics of the O'Reilly Report:
- GPT content usage increased 3,600% in the last year
- NLP interest increased by 195%
- Deep learning and reinforcement learning continue to grow
- Increase of tools such as PyTorch, LangChain and vector databases.
The importance of data remains unchanged as more companies rely on it for their operational and strategic processes. Data science and business analytics tools continue to increase, reflecting their importance in business operations. Data engineering has also seen a slight decline; however, it is still important when managing large-scale data storage. There is a growing demand for ai-powered real-time models and effective data platforms that provide flexible data management solutions.
Some statistics of the O'Reilly Report:
- An increase in the Microsoft Power BI, SQL Server and R statistics toolbox
- A decline in tools like Kafka, Spark, and Hadoop
- A decrease in data warehouses and an increase in data lakes and data meshes.
There have been some changes in the operations sector, with the emergence of more development and engineering platforms. Operating systems like Linux have seen a decline in content usage due to an increase in automation. The same goes for Kubernetes, as new emerging tools make it easier to manage complexity without requiring deep knowledge. Some terminology is also less used, but that doesn't mean it's going away, it simply means that emerging technologies are improving the operational experience by incorporating existing practices.
Some statistics of the O'Reilly Report:
- A decrease in the need for deep Linux knowledge among developers
- A decrease in the use of terms like DevOps and SRE
- Increased interest in supply chain management
- 14% increase in MLOps interest

2023 was a year for the books. A lot has happened, and the rise of the ai generation has had an impact on so many industries, sectors and disciplines.
Are we moving towards understanding the problems and finding solutions to them?
That said, will we see an increase in knowledge of aspects such as architecture, design and also human relations?
