ethereum developers successfully deployed the Dencun upgrade to the Sepolia testnet.
The hard fork includes several tools designed to reduce fees on the ethereum blockchain, while also providing new opportunities for bridges and stabilization funds.
However, this was not the first attempt to roll out the update to the testnet, as the developers did not provide details of the release but noted that Sepolia was updated to Dencun.
Dencun is also implementing the EIP-4844 proposal, known as “proto-danksharding.” It is designed to scale the network by creating a new transaction type to store more data. Developers hope the update will reduce transaction fees on second-level (L2) networks based on roll-up technology.
To further reduce fees and increase transparency, proposals EIP-1153 and EIP-4788 are provided, which are also included in the upcoming hard fork.
However, the previous launch attempt was unsuccessful. On January 17, eth developers launched the Dencun hard fork on the Goerli testnet. However, the update could not be completed due to validator synchronization, and approximately one-fifth of operators do not have the updated software.
Initially, on December 22, 2023, the ethereum team announced that they were going to upgrade Dencun on the Goerli testnet.
The update was initially released on the Goerli testnet and then rolled out to Sepolia and Holesky within two weeks. If all stages are successful, Dencun will appear on the mainnet in February 2024.
