The long-awaited Dencun update has finally arrived for the Goerli testnet, although low participation meant it was not finalized in the expected time.
The Dencun upgrade, which includes a major update known as “proto-danksharding” designed to help reduce Layer 2 transaction fees, launched on ethereum's Goerli testnet on January 17. according to Tim Beiko, community manager of the ethereum Foundation.
Beiko acknowledged that validator participation for the update was “not very good,” but noted that “a similar result was expected.” It also appears that the update resulted in a “split chain” as not all validators synced with each other for the update.
After its deployment on Goerli, the next phase of the update is scheduled for January 31 on the Sepolia testnet, and the Holesky testnet will activate Dencun on February 7. Once Dencun is running smoothly on all three testnets, the ethereum Foundation plans to deploy the update to the ethereum mainnet by the end of Q1 2024.

Subsequently, both the client and the ethereum Foundation test teams will discontinue support for the Goerli testnet after completing the Dencun upgrade.
The Dencun upgrade, known as EIP-4844, aims to increase blockchain space for data blobs and reduce layer 2 rollup fees by enabling proto-danksharding. This expansion of data storage should scale the ethereum blockchain, allowing for greater transaction capacity without increasing gas fees.
