The long-awaited Dencun update for the ethereum network is available on the Goerli testnet. However, the update is experiencing some issues.
According to a live stream on YouTube, Dencun launched in Goerli at 6:32 UTC on Wednesday, but the chain appears to have split because it failed to end when expected.
ethereum Dencun Upgrade Goes Live
The Dencun upgrade is ethereum's largest since the Shapella upgrade in April 2023. While Shapella enabled the withdrawal of staked ether (stETH) on the network, the former is expected to significantly reduce transaction costs on ethereum networks. layer 2 (L2). They are important steps in ethereum's transition from a proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism to a proof-of-stake (PoS) after the merger.
Dencun is expected to improve ethereum L2 rollup efficiency through a mechanism called proto-danksharding or ephemeral blobs (EIP-4844). The approach introduces temporary storage space for higher transactional performance by enabling off-chain data access to reduce storage demands. This process will reduce L2 transaction costs by 10 times or more, as analysts believe that high costs hinder the growth of the protocols.
The upgrade was initially scheduled for October 2023, but was moved to late Q1 or early Q2 2024. It will be rolled out in three phases, with the Goerli rollout being the first. The subsequent deployment will be on the Sepolia testnet on January 31 and then on the Holesky testnet on February 7 before the final launch on the ethereum mainnet.
Purpose issues
Dencun's deployment to Goerli failed to achieve consensus or purpose. The developers believe this may be due to low participation, around 80%, as validators are offline. X Terence pseudonymous user explained that validators could be offline due to operators not updating software or the presence of a bug.
Because Goerli has a “highly” diverse set of validators, it might take a while before the issue becomes clear. Regardless, the developers pretend perform a definitive test in the next few hours or days.
“Personally, I do not base my assessment of Goerli Deneb's readiness on the immediate definitive results. It will take time to accurately assess the status. Therefore, before anyone claims that the Goerli hard fork failed and Deneb is delayed, we must allow time for proper analysis,” Terence said.
