Arizona lawmaker wants Bitcoin to be legal tender
Arizona State Senator Wendy Rogers has introduced several cryptocurrency-related bills, including one to make Bitcoin legal tender in her state.
“I released my crypto bills today,” Rogers tweeted on Tuesday. The bills are cosponsored by fellow State Senate Republicans Jeff Weninger and JD Mesnard.
One of the bills proposes making bitcoin legal tender. The legislation defines cryptocurrency as “the peer-to-peer decentralized digital currency in which a record of transactions is maintained on the bitcoin blockchain and new units of currency are generated through computational solution of mathematical problems and which operates independently of a center”. bank.”
Another bill proposes to allow state agencies to enter into “an agreement with a cryptocurrency issuer to provide a method for accepting cryptocurrency as a method of payment for fines, civil or other penalties, rent, fees, taxes, fees, charges, revenue , financial obligations , and special contributions to pay any amount owed to that agency or to this state”.
Rogers introduced a similar bill to make Bitcoin legal tender in Arizona last year, but it was quickly struck down. She tweeted last April:
Centralized digital money controlled by central bankers is slavery. Decentralized Bitcoin is freedom.
In September 2021, El Salvador became the first country to adopt bitcoin as legal tender alongside the US dollar. Since then, the country, led by pro-bitcoin president Nayib Bukele, has bought thousands of BTC for your treasury. Last November, Bukele announced that El Salvador is buying bitcoin every day.
