I started the weekly Practical Ed tech newsletter ten years ago this month. It was an offshoot of FreeTech4Teachers.com's daily posts that started in 2007. During that time, I answered many (thousands) of reader questions. But there's one question that comes up more than any other every year.
Every year, the most frequently asked question is: “What are you using to make your videos?” For most of those years the answer was Screencast-o-Matic. Last year Screencast-o-matic changed its name to ScreenPal. I still use it to make the vast majority of videos appear on my YouTube channel. Here is a short video overview of how Screenpal works.
ScreenPal is available in free and paid versions. The free version offers enough features for teachers who only make a few videos a month. If you're making more videos than that, you'll probably want to upgrade or take a look at other options.
Windows 11 users have a free screenshot tool at their disposal. The built-in snipping tool in Windows 11 now includes a screenshot option. Here's a quick overview of how it works.
Mac users, QuickTime still offers a built-in screencasting tool. It doesn't offer much in the way of editing, but you can import your recording into iMovie to do all the editing you might need for a screencast video.
