Despite a challenging year for nft sales, CryptoPunks and Yuga Labs' Bored Ape Yacht Club dominated the list of the most expensive nft sales in 2023.
These two collections remarkably maintained their appeal among collectors and investors, even in a year in which the broader market experienced crises and uncertainties.
The most expensive NFTs sold in 2023
Yuga Labs, initially known for its Bored Ape Yacht Club, and CryptoPunks, created by Larva Labs, saw a significant drop in their price floors. Bored Ape Yacht Club's floor price fell by 57.6%, while CryptoPunks saw a 13.8% decline from January 1 to November 28, 2023.
However, these collections still accounted for the majority of the year's top nft sales. Four sales each came from Bored Ape and CryptoPunks, who were joined by a Fidenza from art blocks and a mutant monkey nft.
The list of the most expensive nft sales in 2023 is as follows:
- CryptoPunks #5066-857 eth: The highest priced nft sale in 2023 was held on February 6, because it was 1 of 88 “ZombiePunks” and had rare attributes such as a knit cap and an earring.
- Bored Ape Yacht Club #7090 – 800 eth: Sold on February 7, this Bored Ape is distinguished by its unique features, including rainbow-colored teeth, golden fur, and heart-shaped glasses.
- Fidenza #545-625 eth: The only non-CryptoPunks or Bored Apes nft on the list, sold on OpenSea, created by Tyler Hobbs' generative collection of nft Art Blocks.
- CryptoPunk #7458 – 600 eth: Another ZombiePunk with distinctive features, including sunglasses and a beard, sold on November 6.
- Bored Ape Yacht Club #1734 – 600 eth: Prized for his solid gold fur and smoking a cigarette, he was sold on July 13.
- CryptoPunks #8531 – 550 eth: A rare “ZombiePunk” with stringy hair and sunglasses, sold on July 15.
- Bored Ape Yacht Club #4980 – 530 eth: Sold on May 15 for his unique combination of rare traits, including his cute pink and blue party hat.
- Mutant Ape Yacht Club #30002 – 500 eth: The only piece of the Mutant Ape collection on this list, sold on September 1, is the only nft of the 20,000 MAYC NFTs with the “Mega Zombie” trait.
- CryptoPunk #3307 – 500 eth: Unlike the others, which stands out for having absolutely no attributes, it was sold on August 4.
- Bored Ape Yacht Club #5116 – 440 eth: Sold on March 7 due to his rarity traits (unshaven, golden crown, “trash eyes,” etc.).
The high-value transactions of these NFTs, despite an overall market slowdown, indicate continued fascination and confidence in the world of digital art and collectibles. As such, 2023 constitutes a clear indicator of the selective resilience and potential of NFTs in the blockchain-centric landscape.
