Along with a countdown showing that the next Unpacked will be on January 17, leaker Evan Blass shared a spec sheet that aims to break down the components of the Galaxy S24 line. Like the S23 (pictured above), expect three Galaxy devices: the regular model, an S24+, and an S24 Ultra. All three are planned to run on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
The leak suggests that Samsung will offer up to 30x Space Zoom and up to 3x dual telephoto zoom on the Galaxy S24 and S24+, while the Ultra will likely have a more robust camera system. If the leak turns out to be true, it will have a 200MP main lens, with a quadruple telephoto lens of up to 10x and a 100x space zoom.
So far, the Samsung S24 line is not likely to have any terribly interesting upgrades in pure designs and specifications. These are likely to include the company's own Gauss generative ai systems, so, as with Google's Pixel series, the hardware may only tell half the story. Let's see what appears next year.

Hyperloop One is closing
There is no high-speed transportation system between Europe and China.
Hyperloop One had once dreamed of building a high-speed freight link between Europe and China, one that could carry cargo from one end to the other in a single day. But the dream is practically dead. Hyperloop One is closing, a staff member confirmed to Engadget after Bloomberg reported its closure. What Hyperloop company was this? From 2017 to 2022, it was known as Virgin Hyperloop One due to an investment by Richard Branson's Virgin Group. Virgin quietly retired its brand last year when the company abandoned plans to carry passengers to focus on a cargo-only service. The company was unable to secure a contract to build a working Hyperloop system.

Beeper says it's done playing cat and mouse with Apple with its iMessage app
Issued a final fix for current users.
Beeper versus Apple has been our little showdown between David and Goliath, but it seems that the saga is coming to an end. The company says this will be the last solution released. Beeper wrote in a blog post today that he is done “playing cat and mouse with the largest company” on the planet. Be warned: it's… complicated.

GTA 6 hacker sentenced to indefinite hospitalization after mental health evaluation
He hacked Rockstar Games from a hotel using a Fire TV device.
London judge sentences teenage hacker who infiltrated Rockstar Games, leaked Grand theft car VI footage, to indefinite hospitalization. Arion Kurtaj breached Rockstar servers from a Travelodge hotel while in police custody, using only an Amazon Fire TV Stick, a smartphone, a keyboard and a mouse. (He was quickly rearrested.) Kurtaj was a central member of the international hacking group Lasus$.
The two accomplices (the other is 17 years old, so he cannot be identified) are the first members of Lapsus$ to be convicted. Authorities believe other members of the group (suspected to be mainly teenagers in the United Kingdom and Brazil) are still at large. It is unclear what kind of reward the hackers got for the ransom demands, if any, as none of the affected companies have admitted to contributing.

Microsoft is rejecting its Windows mixed reality platform
This should not affect the Hololens 2.
Microsoft is shutting down its Windows Mixed Reality platform, according to an official list of deprecated Windows features. This includes Windows Mixed Reality software, along with the Mixed Reality Portal app and the affiliated Steam VR app. The platform isn't gone yet, but Microsoft says it will be “removed in a future version of Windows.”
Microsoft first introduced Windows Mixed Reality in 2017 as an attempt to compete with rivals in the virtual reality space, such as HTC and Oculus (which is now owned by Meta). We were fascinated by the technology when it was launched as it offered the ability to -person shared mixed reality. But the acceptance apparently was not great enough. Thank goodness I can still use MS Office on my Quest headsets…
