Five years after its debut at CES 2018, Hyundai’s e-Corner technology is closer to reality. After its peak performance, the system was on display at the fair last week. And this time, instead of building a dedicated prototype to showcase the technology, the automaker’s Mobis arm integrated e-Corner into a .
As you can see in the video Hyundai shared (), the module, like the , allows the wheels of a car to turn in ways that a vehicle with a traditional suspension system cannot. Subsequently, that allows you to complete maneuvers that you can’t in other vehicles. Parallel parking, for example, is as easy as turning the wheels 90 degrees and driving the car level. Less practical but just as cool, e-Corner also allows cars to move diagonally and turn in the same place. It is even possible to perform a pivot turn.
It’s likely to be a few years before e-Corner modules start showing up on production vehicles. In 2021, Hyundai Mobis it planned to start rolling out the technology in 2025. That said, it wouldn’t be surprising to see other automakers incorporate the technology into their cars, since the division produces parts for other companies, not just Hyundai.
