ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined an ambitious set of proposals for the ethereum network, focusing on addressing crucial issues such as centralizing staking, scalability, and improving security. during a interview With the nft platform Defiant in Turkey, Buterin highlighted the need for an overhaul of ethereum‘s staking mechanism to improve decentralization.
“We need to encourage healthier betting groups,” he emphasized, adding that one of the biggest changes “is the realization that something needs to be done about the centralization of betting, the status quo of different groups (… ) is not very healthy and I think there is a great opportunity to do some redesigns in the betting system to alleviate some of these problems.”
Important changes for ethereum
Buterin also talked about the upcoming EIP-4844 update, known as Danksharding. “This update will increase the data map space to 16 megabytes per slot,” he explained, highlighting its importance in improving the scalability and efficiency of ethereum.
He also stated:
Overall, in terms of scale, I feel like the pendulum has swung back slightly to off-chain data because (…) the level of security you can get with off-chain data. The Plasma ideas that I told you about a few days ago are a good example. Additionally, we continue to make progress on Merkle Tree, SNARK, and all EVM improvements. (…) But nothing new in terms of functionality.
Additionally, he proposed a voting system for future changes to the network, with the goal of democratizing the process and potentially eliminating the need for hard forks. Buterin also delved into advanced concepts such as private mempools, ERC-4337, code precompilation, and zero-knowledge ethereum virtual machines (ZK-EVM). He stressed the importance of these features to improve network performance and user security.
Additionally, he advocated reducing reliance on centralized servers, promoting software advances such as Portal Network and Helios for a more decentralized peer-to-peer network. “Our goal is to empower users to independently verify data, moving away from reliance on centralized nodes,” she said.
Buterin is optimistic
Reviewing the concept of Plasma, a scaling solution co-invented with Joseph Poon, Buterin noted its improved compatibility with complex systems due to the integration of zero-knowledge non-interactive succinct knowledge arguments (ZK-SNARKs).
Overall, Buterin concluded with an optimistic outlook, celebrating ethereum‘s successful transition to proof-of-stake and highlighting progress in scalability solutions and security advancements. The proposed changes are expected to make ethereum more scalable, secure, and efficient, potentially reducing barriers for new users and developers and fostering a more inclusive and robust ecosystem.
He said: “I’m excited by the fact that there is finally a light in the tunnel for all the hard things. (…) Just like the merger happened, scalability solutions are happening (Arbitrum, zk-Sync) (…) And light in the tunnel in Dank-Sharding. I think the fact that we have both Dank-Sharding and Plasma also takes a big burden off my shoulders because only one of them needs to be successful for ethereum to be scalable.”
At the time of this publication, eth was trading at $2,023.
