The long charging time is a barrier to entry for most people trying to adopt the plug instead of the pump.
according to teslaTSLAits home-installed Wall Connector can provide its vehicles with “up to 44 miles of range per hour of charging,” while its fast chargers called Supercharger can provide up to “200 miles in 15 minutes of charging.”

However, the wizards of Volvo-backed EV rival PolestarLIFEhave something even faster.
At their Polestar Day event, the Swedish electric vehicle wizards announced that they have been developing a new “extremely fast charging battery” that is capable of providing 100 miles of charge in just five minutes.
Polestar has collaborated with StoreDot, a lithium-ion battery developer focused on accelerating electric vehicle charging that claims to have “revolutionized the conventional lithium-ion battery through innovation and synthesis of proprietary organic and inorganic compounds.”

More surprisingly, the company said it is on track to reduce the already fast charging speed to just 100 miles in 3 minutes by 2028, and is aiming for a blistering two minutes in 2032.
Polestar said they have equipped a Polestar 5 prototype with these advanced batteries and the system is essentially ready for production.
“We are very pleased and proud that Polestar aims to be the first automotive company to showcase our extremely fast-charging battery cells in a large-scale drivable prototype,” said Dr. Doron Myersdorf, head of StoreDot. “We still have a lot of work to do.” “We are looking to fully integrate our systems into a production car, but our teams are already fully committed and we will demonstrate those results in the coming months.”
Unlike most conventional EV batteries, StoreDot claims their batteries have a completely flat charge curve, plus there is no charge degradation; meaning your batteries will charge at their maximum rate for their entire lifespan. The company says what sets its batteries apart from the competition is that the graphite in typical electric vehicle lithium-ion batteries is replaced with silicon.
Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said: “StoreDot’s pioneering extremely fast-charging batteries, combined with our upcoming top-of-the-line electric powertrain, can revolutionize the ownership experience for electric vehicle owners with the ability to recharge. in minutes”.

To take full advantage of this fast charging, a charger capable of charging at 350 kW would be needed. Currently, Electrify America offers 350 kW of charging at its “Hyper Fast” charging locations that are available in very select locations across the country.
Polestar’s commitment to the NACS charging port means that its vehicles could be charged at Tesla Superchargers, whose “V4 Supercharger” is capable of such charging speeds.
Polestar claims that the “100in5” battery will enter production in 2027.
