In an effort to help viewers understand which of its spin-off projects will have meaningful connections to the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe and which are actually intended to function as standalone stories, Marvel is launching a new type of branding just in time for its next Echo series.
Before EchoFollowing its debut on both Disney Plus and Hulu, Marvel announced today that it will be the first series to arrive under the studio’s new Marvel Spotlight banner: the brand that consists of all the MCU spin-offs that, while set in the same universe where the Avengers exist. You don’t have to watch to understand what will happen next. Avengers movie, for example.
speaking to marvel.comMarvel streaming chief Brad Winderbaum compared the Spotlight banner to The classic Marvel anthology of the same name. in terms of introducing new characters that have become fan favorites like Echo/Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox). Winderbaum also described Echo — an action-adventure drama about a deaf Choctaw crime lord turned vigilante — as exactly the kind of “character-driven” story Spotlight should focus on.
“Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen and, in the case of Echo, focus on the street-level stakes of the broader MCU continuity. Just as comic book fans didn’t need to read The Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story.”
Although Marvel presents it as a clever new feature, Spotlight feels like a response to criticism that the MCU has become much harder to follow than it used to be in the days before Disney Plus and Marvel’s old plan. flood the space with as many streaming series as possible. Spotlight will definitely be useful for people who just want to keep up with the big things happening in the MCU, but it will also be very interesting to see what projects get that mark in the future.
