WASHINGTON – The Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona, today appointed the superintendent of the Baldwin Union Free School District, Shari Camhi, to be part of the National Evaluation Governing Boardwhich oversees the only continuous, nationally representative assessment of student achievement in the country.
The Governing Board is a nonpartisan body established by Congress in 1988 to oversee and set policies for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as The Nation’s Report Card. NAEP provides objective information on student performance in various subjects and reports on student performance nationwide, in states, and in select large urban districts.
The 26-member Board of Directors is responsible for deciding what subjects NAEP tests, determining the content of the assessment, establishing performance levels that describe student performance, and finding new ways to make NAEP results useful and meaningful. for the public.
Camhi is the Superintendent of Schools for the Baldwin Union Free School District, in Baldwin, New York. In that role, he has advocated for innovation, civic readiness, and closer connections between school learning and the workforce, including overseeing the creation of seven career academies in the district that connect rigorous coursework with learning opportunities beyond the classroom. She also serves as past president of AASA, the Association of School Superintendents. In that role, Camhi regularly communicates with school system leaders across the country and is attuned to their concerns and priorities, including in the area of assessment.
