A few weeks after announcing that he intended to leave PlatinumGames, Hideki Kamiya posted a video on youtube celebrating their first official day of strike. In the video, Kamiya explained what he has been doing, what his future plans are and clarified that, although he left PlatinumGames, he does not plan to retire anytime soon.
“I’m over it. I’m over it,” Kamiya said as he left the PlatinumGames office with a box full of toys, including an Ultraman figure and a Bayonetta plush.
Kamiya quickly summarized his nearly 30-year history of developing games starting at Capcom, working on resident Evil, The devil can cryand showy joe. He moved on to Clover Studio to work on Eyesbefore eventually joining PlatinumGames running the bayonet trilogy and more.
Kamiya said that now that he left Platinum, he feels renewed.
“When you’re at work, you have to attend those boring meetings with all kinds of important people. I don’t have to attend those meetings anymore, so I feel relieved,” Kamiya said.
But he seemed to have some difficulty explaining exactly why he left PlatinumGames and asked the cameraman to air his response. Finally, he said that the reason he quit was that “I wanted to follow my beliefs as a game creator and choose the path that I think is right and move forward.”
Kamiya also addressed rumors that he would be retiring or not leaving Platinum.
Although Kamiya said that he wants to and will continue making games, he explained that he has to take a year-long break from his work in the industry, probably for non-competitive reasons. Coincidentally, Shinji Mikami, founder of The evil within and Hifi fever studio Tango Gameworks who left the company in February, tweeted today that I was ready to get back to work after breaking “the non-compete spell on myself.”
Kamiya also said that his new YouTube endeavor will not be as loved but equally unemployed. Super Smash Bros.creator Masahiro Sakurai.
“Since my career as a game designer spans almost 30 years, with that in mind, I promise to give you COMPLETELY USELESS (emphasis his) stuff for creating games.”
Kamiya spent some time talking about how he is improving his eating habits now that he is unemployed, sharing his hilarious exploits in trying to make homemade curry. His day-to-day activities are relatively simple.
“I’ve been watching Netflix, YouTube, Disney Plus and things like that. “I’ve already lost track of what day it is.”
He then ended the video with the utmost flexibility by driving to the unemployment office in a candy apple red Lamborghini Countach from the late ’80s.
Honestly, I love that for him.
