The World Economic Forum (WEF) has announced the launch of the Global Collaboration Village, its own metaverse platform, for this year. Klaus Schwab, President of the WEF, plans to take advantage of this Davos representation to allow people and leaders to come together in virtual worlds and coordinate global collaborative efforts efficiently.
WEF to promote metaverse-based collaboration
The World Economic Forum (WEF) has announced the launch of its own metaverse platform, dubbed the Global Collaboration Village. The digital world, designed to resemble the real city of Davos where the organization meets once a year, is supposed to allow for more efficient collaboration between world leaders.
According to Klaus Schwab, president of the organization, the WEF plans to take advantage of this new world as a way to turn the Davos meetings, which usually last just a week, into a project that will allow interviews and conversations between world leaders throughout the year.
Schwab is optimistic about this, since the effect of the policies discussed in Davos could be amplified through constant feedback. “This could revolutionize global collaboration,” he said. saying time magazine.
The organization believes that meeting through avatars and digital representations could supercharge the creativity behind these meetings, compared to the video conferences that commonly occur during these events.
Technology and partners
The technology that would drive this representation of the Davos metaverse would be provided by Microsoft and its Mesh suite, which extends the functionality of Teams, the popular business meeting software, to allow users to appear as 3D avatars. Mesh also has an app specially designed for VR headsets that allows for more interactivity with the worlds of the metaverse.
This level of immersion is key to the applications that the WEF intends to give to these spaces, such as showing the effect that certain measures could have, for example, in the restoration of oceanic coral reefs. Kelly Ommundsen, director of the WEF metaverse project, stated that the group is “trying to do things that can only happen in the metaverse, because if it’s better to do it in person or on paper, then there’s no point.”
Schwab has already had the collaboration and presence of several partners, including Meta and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), who will populate the spaces of the village with their projects. He expects some resistance to this initiative, but he also expects more participation from people outside the organization. He explained:
We need new forms of international cooperation, which allow us to involve many more people in our discussions.
