As a woman in the world of Graphic Design, UI/UX, Web Design, and STEAM, I want to share my story and inspire other girls and young women to pursue their passions fearlessly. In this competitive field, it’s vital to break through the barriers and show that girls can excel in STEM careers.
My journey began with a love for photography, art, and a fascination with technology. I realized that graphic design was the perfect combination of these passions, blending creativity with technical skills. I embraced every opportunity to learn and grow in the field of web and graphic design. Through dedicated training and relentless determination, I honed my skills and became proficient in various design software. I discovered that my gender did not limit my abilities; it was my determination and passion that truly propelled me forward.
During my education, I delved into the fundamentals of design principles, color theory, typography, and composition. I also learned coding HTML, CSS, and other web development technologies to broaden and strengthen my skill set. These elements served as building blocks for my creative process. I had a rich learning process that honed my ability to communicate messages and evoke emotions through compelling visual storytelling.
There was also practical training, which is an integral part of becoming a skilled graphic designer. I explored various design software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. To refine and sharpen my practical skills, I regularly volunteer time to some businesses and non-profits, like this organization that helps animals on the Indian reservations in southwest Washington state: Rez Animals.
I really enjoyed hands-on projects and assignments – essential components of graphic design training. These assignments gave me opportunities to apply my growing skills, experiment with different styles, and develop my own unique design aesthetic. I appreciated constructive feedback from my instructors and peers which helped refine my abilities.
Amid my educational journey, I realized the immense potential for girls in STEM. I wanted to be a voice of encouragement, urging young girls to embrace their curiosity and explore the world of science, technology, engineering, and math. I became involved in initiatives focused on empowering girls in STEM, mentoring aspiring designers, and promoting inclusivity in the industry.
Today, I am proud to say that the landscape is changing. More and more girls are stepping into the world of STEM, realizing their potential, and making remarkable contributions. The opportunities for young women in Graphic Design, UI /UX, and Web Design and STEM are boundless.
For girls and young women interested in this field, remember that the educational journey isn’t just about acquiring technical skills – it’s about unlocking your creative potential, finding your artistic voice, and using design as a powerful tool for communication. So, embrace the journey and explore your imagination.
To all the girls out there who dream of pursuing a STEM career, just know that you absolutely have the power to challenge stereotypes and surpass any obstacles in your way. Embrace your passion, seek out mentors and support networks, and never doubt your abilities. Let’s create a future where girls thrive in STEM and leave an indelible mark on the world through graphic design and beyond.
