The US president, Joe Biden, decided to extend for another year the sanctions that the US government decreed against Russia, arguing that the country continues to represent a threat to the security of the nation. Biden had previously spoken of these sanctions, explaining that the only option other than enacting them would involve direct international military conflict.
US President Joe Biden extends sanctions against Russia for another year
US President Joe Biden has decided extend sanctions enacted against the Russian Federation by one year, on the grounds that the country’s activities “continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.”
According Executive Decree 14024issued on April 15, 2021, the Russian government has been making “efforts to undermine the conduct of free and fair democratic elections and democratic institutions in the United States…and to violate well-established principles of international law, including respect for the right territorial”. integrity of states.
This sanctions package allowed for the designation of several Russian entities, including the Russian Duma and its members, and a large number of companies involved in the country’s military-industrial complex. The order was later expanded to designate more people and companies to help the country evade sanctions.
Two options: sanctions or war
The promulgation and extension of these sanctions, as well as their effectiveness, have been criticized by several analysts, who assure that they have contributed to the processes that many countries, such as China and India, are developing to reduce their dependence on the US dollar as reserve and settlement currency.
Senator Marco Rubio commented on the sanctions and stated that other important governments are creating an alternative market for international agreements away from the dollar. On March 30 in an interview on Fox News, he fixed:
We will not have to talk about sanctions in five years because there will be so many countries that operate in currencies other than the dollar that we will not have the capacity to sanction.
However, President Biden had earlier expressed his position on the previous and expanded Russian sanctions, calling them the “broadest” in history and stating that they represent an alternative to direct military confrontation. In an interview with YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen posted on February 26, 2022, referring to the issue of sanctions, Biden fixed:
You have two options. Start a World War 3, go to war with Russia, physically. Or two, to make sure that the country that acts so contrary to international law ends up paying a price for doing so.
