Nissan issues voluntary recall
now nissan (NSANY) has launched a voluntary safety recall of 1,063 of its 2023 Ariya Electric SUVs after the company discovered a similar issue Tesla is having with missing steering wheel bolts that could cause loss of steering control and increased crash risk. .
Dealers were notified of a Quality Action sales suspension on February 22 and the withdrawal effective March 1. Nissan will notify owners of potentially affected vehicles to bring their cars to dealerships for repair from March 1 to March 30.
“Certain Nissan Ariya vehicles underwent a recent port modification activity to replace the flywheel due to a quality issue. As part of the activity, a technician may have inadvertently applied the incorrect torque setting to the flywheel bolt. On certain cases, the steering wheel stud may not have been installed,” according to the NHTSA Safety Recall Report.
The faulty part could cause an accident
“As a result, the steering wheel may experience some play or potentially separate from the steering column if it is pulled toward the driver. If this occurs, loss of steering control may increase the risk of a crash,” the report says.
The timeline of events leading up to the recall states that on January 30, a dealership employee detected a loose steering wheel in a 2023 Ariya, and after investigation, the dealership determined that a steering wheel center bolt was missing. Then on February 8, Nissan received a second report from a dealer with the same issue with a missing steering wheel bolt on a 2023 Ariya.
Nissan determined that both vehicles had been included in a port modification activity to address potential quality issues with the touch steering sensor prior to distribution. Both vehicles had been serviced by the same technician during port modification activity, according to the report.
The electric vehicle maker began on February 11 to inspect 418 Ariya vehicles that had been part of the port modification activity. By February 20, Nissan found one additional Ariya vehicle with a loose steering wheel out of 96 inspected, and launched a voluntary safety recall out of an abundance of caution the next day, according to the report.
Nissan is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the condition in question.
