AS Roma, a major Italian soccer club, now accepts payments on DigitalBits (XDB), the self-described “leading blockchain for brands.”
Payments will be made at five of the club’s flagship retail stores, including Via del Corso, Piazza Colonna, Ottaviano, Porta di Roma and the Fan zone at Stadio Olimpico.
AS Roma accepts cryptocurrencies
According to a press release shared with CryptoPotato, customers will be able to use DigitalBits to purchase AS Roma branded products.
Payments can be made via the AstraX mobile wallet by scanning a QR code, at which point payments are processed within seconds and customers receive cash back via XDB. They are processed by the DigitalBits blockchain, with Coinbar payment processing providing additional support.
“This is a big step for the DigitalBits community as we look to drive adoption of crypto and Web3,” said Daniele Mensi, CEO of the DigitalBits Foundation. “As one of the world’s leading soccer clubs with millions of fans around the globe, it is the perfect next step in this product-focused partnership to bring a consumer-friendly onboarding experience to the next generation of web3 users. ”.
Making cryptocurrency payments mainstream is an ongoing challenge for many companies and brands as they try to encourage cryptocurrency adoption beyond mere speculation. Economic experts, including central bankers – have often criticized Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies for not being able to function as a medium of exchange due to their high price volatility.
Many companies have tried to remedy this problem by providing services that convert one’s crypto into fiat at the point of sale. However, most of these solutions require centralized custody of the consumer’s cryptocurrency, defeating much of the purpose of peer-to-peer blockchain technology.
Sports teams incorporating cryptography
The association of AS Roma makes it the first professional soccer organization to imitate blockchain technology. “This next step will expand what it means for fans to connect with their teams and merge blockchain technology into the mainstream,” the organization said.
