Orlando, Florida – Florida Virtual School (FLVS) is associated with the University of Florida (UF) and the Concord consortium to introduce an innovative complementary certification of “artificial intelligence (ai) in mathematics” for secondary and secondary school students of a year in the flex option of the school. The FLVS instructors who teach algebra 1 will direct this innovative program, teaching online courses while complementing the learning of students with activities that create students' understanding about mathematics and the concepts of ai. FLVS students enrolled in Algebra 1 who choose to obtain the certification will begin on April 7.
The certification will present to the students the fundamental principles of ai that cross the basic issues of mathematics while offering information about real world applications, ethical considerations and career opportunities in fields related to ai. By merging the technology of the 21st century with education, the program aims to boost the mathematical skills of the students, cultivate positive attitudes towards mathematics and expose them to the panorama of rapid evolution.

The certification also includes a collaborative feedback cycle between the FLVS teachers and the researchers of the UF and Concord consortium. Teachers will provide critical information about the online course structure and students' results, helping to refine and improve the effectiveness of certification for future online students.

FLVS teachers will also complete 40 hours of online professional development as part of the program. The training will include learning on specialized learning technologies designed to help visualize concepts of abstract mathematics and create interactive explorations of ai models to ensure that students get involved with the process of developing ai in a significant and dynamic way.
FLVS Flex students who are currently enrolled or are interested in taking algebra 1 can now register in the “ai in mathematics” certification when completing this survey. Students who complete the program as part of their Mathematics class FLVs will receive enrichment credit and the ai literacy certificate issued by UF and the Concord Consortium.
