The developer with the most Bitcoin code changes has announced his decision to step down from the role of Core maintainer.
Bitcoin Core maintainer Marco Falke has announced that he is stepping down.
The prolific Bitcoin developer took to Twitter on Tuesday, saying: “In a challenging decision, I have agreed to transition my role as maintainer. I remain passionate about open source and Bitcoin and am positive about the future, however being a maintainer is no longer a good fit for me personally.”
Falke also took the time to thank his sponsors. The latest financial support from him came from a joint grant from Okcoin and Paradigm.
Falke was an incredibly active participant in the Bitcoin development process, particularly for having merged more changes in the Bitcoin Core code than anyone else. Bitcoin Magazine previously covered Falke’s day job as a maintainer of the Bitcoin Core repository, including his rise to become the most prolific Core developer in terms of the sheer number of individual changes submitted to the project.
Falke’s contributions around the test infrastructure have been the most important, which he identified early on as an inefficiency in the project that he was passionate about improving, as testing is critical to ensuring network continuity and improving reliability. Quality guarantee.
With Falke’s departure, there will now only be four official Bitcoin Core maintainers. While these roles are incredibly important, it’s also important to note that they don’t officially control Bitcoin: Bitcoin users running full nodes must opt-in to code changes that are approved by Bitcoin Core maintainers, adding a layer of checks and balances. to protocol. .
