In less than two weeks, the United States will have a new administration in power, but there is already much debate about President-elect Donald Trump and his policies.
One of the most controversial: his expressed interest in purchasing Greenland for strategic, economic and political reasons.
Trump claims that purchasing Greenland would be vital to US national security, both for surveillance and defense purposes, given its location near Canada and Russia, as well as its energy.
In that sense, Greenland is of interest given its large amount of natural resources in hydroelectric energy, wind energy, geothermal energy and rare earth minerals. This is particularly interesting from a bitcoin perspective, especially given Greenland's cold climate and the lack of bitcoin mining there currently presents a whole new opportunity for the country.
He <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/MuadDib_Pill/status/1877014202717782361″>most American bitcoin mining today takes place in the states of Texas, Georgia, New York and North Dakota. Buying Greenland could give the United States the opportunity to mine under more favorable conditions and further increase and decentralize the bitcoin hashrate.
This could also be a strategic play for the United States, considering Russia's Vladimir Putin signed a law to legalize bitcoin mining in August 2024 and declared in 2022 that the country has “some competitive advantages” in bitcoin mining given its cold weather.
With Donald Trump's continued support for American bitcoin miners and his expressed interest in leading this industry before competing countries adopt it, this gives Trump the opportunity to dramatically expand American dominance in bitcoin mining under conditions favorable.
Not only would this be a victory for the United States, but Greenland would also benefit. Greenland relies heavily on financial support from the Danish government, and bitcoin mining could offer an alternative economic avenue. Greenland would then have the full support of the US government to use its natural and untapped resources to mine bitcoin and get any other support they need. Greenland could then create more jobs to build the infrastructure necessary to run these operations and generate additional income from the mined bitcoin. And as the price of bitcoin increases, that only makes mined btc and mining operations even more valuable. I think it's beneficial for everyone.
Trump is very eager to acquire Greenland and make it a US territory. If it does, it could also be a big boost for bitcoin.
