amazon may have released a new Kindle Scribe earlier this month for $399.99, but after trying it out, I still don't think it can compete with its rivals. If you're looking for a good e-reader with more useful note-taking features, the Kobo Ellipsa 2E remains one of my favorites and is down to an all-time low of $349.99 ($50 off) at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.amazon.com/Kobo-Glare-Free-Touchscreen-ComfortLight-Adjustable/dp/B0C15G7J3V?tag=theverge02-20″>amazon either Aim. Rakuten Kobo You'll also add $10 in credit when you purchase a $50 gift card, which you can use to purchase books either styles.
If you're the kind of person who likes to doodle in the margins while reading e-books, you'll probably prefer the Kobo Elipsa 2E. The Elipsa 2E allows you to write directly on the pages of an e-book, taking notes in the margins or anywhere else you want, just as you would on paper. The new Kindle Scribe also lets you write directly on the pages, but it's much more complicated and you can't even circle phrases or words.
Elipsa 2E also offers other useful features beyond a more natural note-taking experience. It has twice the storage (32GB) of the basic Kindle Scribe, for example, and accurately converts handwriting to typed text faster than the Scribe. The biggest drawback, of course, is that it doesn't natively support Kindle e-books, so you'll have to convert your library if you want to read them from your Kobo device.
