Cruise ship crew members live in very small spaces, sometimes sharing a cabin with not just one but two other crew members.
Ariana Monae accepted a job as a waitress at Norwegian Cruise Line. He went into the experience knowing it would be long hours, no days off, and a lot of work.
Cruise ship cabins have greatly improved for crew members on newer ships. On older boats, they generally offer very clever use of space, but not as much privacy.
Monae's cabin has three bunk beds, each with its own privacy screen, as well as three lockers and three lockable drawers. It's hard to imagine how the three crew members could interact in the cabin unless at least one was in bed.
In most cases, crew members share cabins with members of their team. That means they will have at least somewhat similar schedules.
This is positive, since cabin mates will not wake up at ungodly hours. It is also a problem given the very small bathroom.
After this video was released, Monae resigned from her position at the cruise line.

Some closets. We keep things on top of the closets because you will see that our rooms are small. So we have like three closets here.
And then we come to the small desk area. Sorry it's a mess because you all live here, you know? I get packages and all that.
There is also a drawer for each of us on the desk. I'll show you the bathroom. It's very small too.
The shower. Super small. And you know.
All bathroom material. Really small bathroom. I know, I know.
But I actually kind of like the bathroom mirror. It's like the best part. I'll show you the desktop.
I don't even know. I'll show you the desktop. We have a small mini fridge in there.
We have some cleaning supplies in there for our Swiffer that we have. In the corner here, you know. Try to keep it clean because it is very small.
This is my bed. Princess bed. I actually got it today because my roommate left.
