T-Mobile and Starlink are moving forward with their plan through the latter's satellites. The companies participated in the project last month, and now the carrier is opening sign-ups to anyone who wants to test the beta version of the creatively named T-Mobile Starlink.
The first beta test is planned for 2025. At first it will focus on text messages. Voice and data connectivity is planned to be available at a later date. Any T-Mobile postpaid voice customer with a compatible device can do this. However, there are limited spots available and the provider says it is prioritizing the program.
T-Mobile Starlink previously received emergency approval to bolster communications during Hurricanes Helene and Milton. “Even without the full constellation in place, customers with capable devices were able to receive critical emergency alerts and send and receive messages when satellites were overhead,” “The system proved useful to many who lost mobile and/or broadband access.” and provided critical data that will help further refine the service.
With the help of Starlink, T-Mobile plans to provide coverage to the 500,000 square miles of US territory that are not covered by terrestrial cell towers. The direct-to-cellular satellite constellation is designed to integrate into T-Mobile's existing network with the idea that it will operate like regular cellular service. Over time, the carrier says, T-Mobile Starlink will be “available in most outdoor areas where you can see the sky.”
