Meta apps and services like instagram, facebook, Threads, and Messenger are still experiencing issues more than two hours after a major outage prevented users from logging in or even loading company websites. For a while, even the Meta company site displayed the text “This page is currently unavailable.”
There was <a target="_blank" data-i13n="elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1" class="link " href="https://downdetector.com/status/facebook/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank” data-ylk=”slk:over 90,000 reports;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas”>more than 90,000 reports of issues for facebook.com alone on Downdetector, and the site is still showing some outage reports for Whatsapp, Threads, and Messenger. Clearly, the problem is also not concentrated in a single meta-application or service. the company own status page for enterprise customers also shows “major outages” in almost all of Meta's APIs and advertising tools.
When Engadget contacted Meta for comment, the company pointed out a brief statement. <a target="_blank" data-i13n="elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1" class="link " href="https://x.com/Meta/status/1866918000374280593″ rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank” data-ylk=”slk:on x;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas”>in x recognizing the problem.

Meta last faced a major outage in March 2024 that prevented users from accessing its apps and services for two hours. The latest blackout was attributed to a <a target="_blank" data-i13n="elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1" class="link " href="https://x.com/andymstone/status/1765064721416245460″ rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank” data-ylk=”slk:"technical issue";elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas”>”technical problem” by Meta communications director Andy Stone, which is the same explanation Meta has offered so far, but it's unclear when the issue will be fully resolved.
Update, December 11, 2024, 4:50 pm ET: Added more details on the duration of the outage and the impact on meta-business tools.
