There's a lot we don't know about what's in store for technology in 2025. ai could save the world, ruin it, or do virtually nothing interesting. A new US president could change priorities and policies regarding antitrust fights and privacy regulations. Will TikTok be banned? Will fediverso take off? Will it be the year of Matter? Willpower Grand theft car VI Change society forever? Will it be the next Mission: Impossible Will the movie be amazing? Look, I didn't say the stakes were always high. But there are many questions.
In this episode of The VergecastWe try to offer some answers, without any evidence. Nilay, David and Wall Street Journal columnist (and always friend of The edge) Joanna Stern Take turns offering your predictions for the coming year.
We start with our softer, timid versions of technology in 2025, before moving on to our bigger, hotter, spicier thoughts. And since we must be accountable for our actions, we turn it into a game.
Here's how the game works: each host offers a prediction and the other two have the opportunity to agree or reject the prediction. At the end of the year, whoever gets that prediction right gets a point. If you make a mistake, you lose a point. Next week we will have even more predictions and even more points available. A year from now, we'll review who was right most often and buy the winner the coolest gadget of 2025, whatever that may be. (We'll also need your help to decide, but we'll come back to that.)
Don't read the following until you've heard or seen the episode, but for the tape, here are our predictions and results:
What are your predictions for 2025? What do you think we did right and wrong? Who is going to win the game? Tell us what you think! And keep an eye out for all the cool gadgets of 2025, because we've got a winner to shop for. Eventually.
