The Google Photos app is launching a throwback experience that highlights some of the most memorable moments from this year. The “2024 Recap” presentation feature announced today combines a collection of photos and information with graphics and cinematic effects that summarize what users have been doing over the past 12 months, a concept similar to Spotify Wrapped.
Insights from the 2024 summary include information such as how many photos you took, the length of your longest photo streak, the most photographed colors, who you took the most photos of, and who you smiled the most with. Google says that “select users in the US.” Those who have Gemini enabled in the Photos app can also choose to receive a version of Recap that adds custom captions highlighting the “two most important moments of your year.”
The summary will appear in the Google Photos Memories carousel throughout December before moving to the photos grid in January and can be shared on messaging apps and social networks. There are a few caveats, however: Recap is only available to Photos users who have the Face Group Settings Enabledwhich uses facial recognition to identify and group similar faces. This feature has some regional restrictions, so year-end highlights will not be available globally.
