Microsoft has announced Microsoft Edge Game Assist, a new gaming browser overlay powered by Edge, is available for beta testing on Windows 11. The “game aware” overlay is located in Microsoft's Game Bar and is designed to automatically search and display links to tips and guides for the game you are playing, using the Edge browser.
Game Assist uses the profile you're signed in to in Edge, so it will give you access to your data, like cookies, autofill, and favorites, so you “don't need to sign in to sites again.” Like other game bar widgets, you can pin it on top of your game while you play. Game Assist is currently available in English and you will need to opt-in to the preview and set Microsoft Edge Beta 132 as your default browser to use it.
Here's a video of the feature in action:
You'll have to search for content yourself for most games for now, but the part of Game Assist that recognizes the game will automatically display information for some games, including Baldur's Gate 3, Diablo IV, and Hellblade II: The Senua Saga. Microsoft says it will add support for others “during preview and over time.”
In a second video, Microsoft shows what the overlay looks like when used to follow video guides:
Microsoft says it is collecting feedback in several ways:
You can share your feedback on Game Assist by going to Settings and more (“…”) > Send feedback. You can also vote on what features you want added to Game Assist using the new Game Assist Community Feedback Portaland we will be monitoring the comments on r/MicrosoftEdgex and other social channels too.
Game Assist only supports mouse and keyboard input for now, but Microsoft writes that it will add support for handheld devices and gamepads in the future. Compact mode support will also come later, the company says.
Below are Microsoft's instructions for getting started with Game Assist.
