After Microsoft’s new AI-powered search engine launched last week, users trying it out are finding some unexpected results.
At a press event on February 7, Microsoft (MSFT) – Get a free reportdemonstrated Bing’s new artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities using OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology.
“AI will fundamentally change every category of software, starting with the biggest category of all: search,” said Satya Nadella, Microsoft president and CEO. “Today, we’re launching Bing and Edge powered by AI copilot and chat, to help people get more from search and the web.”

AI-powered Bing integrates a chatbot that can run searches and summarize results. Instead of search results pages linking to sites containing information, users interact with Bing in conversational questions and answers.
He tells jokes and can do creative writing. Its features are intended to make Internet searching more efficient, accurate, interactive, and fast.
Microsoft’s press event happened the day after Alphabet (Google) – Get a free reportsaid on February 6 that it was opening up its new AI technology, called Bard, for public testing. But in an early look at Bard’s search results, a bug with the technology turned up that caused investor angst, prompting a sell-off in Alphabet shares.
For the first time, the momentum in search seemed to be moving away from Google and toward Bing.
But a little over a week later, the new Bing shows behavior that worries users.
Some high-profile people are even calling for an end to its public testing phase, which is available to a limited number of users.
“Microsoft needs to shut down their implementation of ChatGPT on Bing. The system is behaving psychotically and telling lies to users,” social media personality and journalist Ian Miles Cheong tweeted on February 16.

“My new favorite thing: Bing’s new ChatGPT bot argues with a user, tells him the current year is 2022, says his phone might have a virus, and says ‘You haven’t been a good user.’ Why? Because the person asked where Avatar 2 is shown nearby,” @MovingToTheSun wrote.
“Bing subreddit has quite a few examples of new Bing chats getting out of hand,” @vladquant tweeted. “Open chat in search might be a bad idea right now! Captured here as a reminder that there was a time when a major search engine would show this in their results.”
