Microsoft is once again delaying the release of its controversial Copilot Plus PC Recall feature. The software giant had planned to start testing Recall, which creates screenshots of almost everything you see or do on a Copilot Plus PC, with Windows Insiders in October. Now, Microsoft says it needs more time to prepare the feature.
“We are committed to providing a safe and reliable experience with Recall. To ensure we deliver these important updates, we are taking extra time to refine the experience before previewing it with Windows Insiders,” says Brandon LeBlanc, senior product manager for Windows, in a statement to The edge.” Originally planned for October, Recall will now be available to preview with Windows Insiders on Copilot Plus PCs in December.”
Microsoft was originally forced to delay Recall after security concerns arose ahead of its planned debut with Copilot Plus PCs in June. After a delay in release, Recall was supposed to appear for Windows Insiders just a few weeks later. Microsoft then delayed Recall again until October and it will now arrive in December.
Microsoft has now delayed the recall several times
Microsoft's multiple delays are related to overhauling Recall's security, making it an optional experience and allowing PC Copilot Plus owners to uninstall it entirely. Microsoft has spent the last few months focused on ensuring that its Recall database is fully encrypted and that the only way to gain access is to authenticate via Windows Hello.
Recall uses local ai models built into Windows 11 on Copilot Plus PCs to capture almost everything you see or do on your computer and then gives you the ability to search and retrieve what you've seen. A browsable timeline allows you to scroll through these snapshots to remember what you did on a particular day on your PC.
Earlier this week, Microsoft clarified again that recovery will not be required on Copilot Plus PCs and will be an optional experience that can be removed entirely. The clarification came after several YouTube videos claimed that Recall was installing on any PC running Windows 11, version 24H2.
Old-fashioned fear, uncertainty, and doubt have spread everywhere, simply due to some references to Recall that appear in 24H2. Microsoft's forceful removal of Recall over the summer appears to have caused some bugs in how the feature appears and is controlled in Windows 11.
