We still don’t have all the answers to those questions (although I need an answer on the Lego Movie stats). However, we finally got our first look at this long-awaited Lego set, which (quite accurately) replicates the game from the Dynamite music videocomplete with mini-figs of all seven members of the group.
The set was based on a idea submitted by a fan of two BTS fans and Lego builders. “I watched the music video over and over again and tried to capture its essence in LEGO bricks,” Josh Bretz, 20, one of the creators, writes in the Lego press release.
The set of 749 pieces It includes several of the main settings featured in the music video, including the donut shop, the record store, the basketball hoop, and that ice cream truck that’s always turning around. The stage is also present in the back, although this replica is not as faithful. All the pieces are modular, so you can move them around.
Notably, Jungkook’s room is missing from the opening verse, although I understand that recreating all those posters with Legos would have been a thing and a half.
Lego has captured some specific details; Elements like the graffiti behind the basketball hoop, the directions printed on the shop windows, and the Open sign next to the donut shop are very well constructed. The green arrow must be at an angle bit further down, but I know I’m getting into the weeds here. You can’t recreate the plane that flies over the second chorus either, but can have Jungkook hold the donut outside the donut shop, which is consolation enough.
The company did a pretty impressive job of replicating each member’s hairstyle, considering we’re talking about… Lego hair. Jungkook’s black hair is easily distinguishable from J-Hope’s black hair, for example.
The seven figurines are dressed in the outfits the group wears at the beginning of the second chorus of the song (instead of the outfits from their previous individual takes or the pastel clothes from the beginning and end). Lego doesn’t provide multiple minifigures for a costume change (and with a US price tag of $99.99, this isn’t the cheapest piece of BTS merch you can buy). The figurines have multiple expressions, at least; for example, you can have RM wink at you or just look thoughtful, while Jungkook has both a smile and the puzzled look of his iconic donut.
This Lego set will be on sale in March. While you wait, you can take a look at the images sent to you by Lego, where the company has gone to admirable lengths to make the figurines look like they’re doing dance moves with their aerobically limited limbs.
