The original PlayStation console, also called the PS1, was released in Japan in late 1994, so we're quickly approaching the console's 30th anniversary. To mark the occasion, Sony has just revealed nostalgic redesigns of both consoles. PS5 and the upcoming PS5 ProThey look like the original PlayStation, with that classic grey colour and old-school logo. Gamers of a certain age will find these things hard to resist. Sony did something similar in 2014 with the PS4 for the console line's 20th anniversary.
This isn't a quick and easy redesign. A lot of thought has gone into it. The updated DualSense controller doesn't quite match the original design, but it does match the overall aesthetic. Sony includes a retro-looking cable connector housing, PlayStation-shaped cable ties, and a themed vertical stand. The box even looks like it came straight out of a '90s Toys “R” Us store.
There are two bundles to choose from. The PS5 bundle includes the digital version of the console (no disc drive), a standard DualSense controller, the aforementioned accessories, and additional goodies like a sticker, a poster, and, uh, a PlayStation clip.
The PS5 Pro bundle includes everything mentioned above, but includes both a standard controller and the DualSense Edge. It also includes a retro cover for the optional disc drive and charging stand. It’s easy to get into that expensive PS5 Pro when it looks basically the same as a regular PS5. It’s a lot harder to do so when it looks like something straight out of a 1995 fever dream.
Even the oddball PlayStation Portal, a pseudo-portable console, will receive a themed update that includes the iconic grey exterior. Sony fans can even pick up redesigned controllers without having to buy a full console.
Pre-orders begin September 26 at participating retailers and Through the company itselfThese items are set to release on November 21, which is just a couple of weeks after the PS5 Pro launches. Because of this, Sony will only be making 12,300 PS5 Pro retro consoles, so we recommend pre-ordering early. Unfortunately, the company hasn’t released any pricing information, and the PS5 Pro bundle is likely to break the bank. We’ve reached out to ask about pricing and will update this post when we hear back.
While we wait for pre-orders to begin, senior reporter Jessica Conditt was able to get a quick look at the 30th Anniversary Edition PS5 Pro and DualSense controllers, which you can check out below:
