Weekend cruises have become big business.
Royal Caribbean has ships that sail the traditional Friday-Monday weekend from Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale.
It has even dubbed its new ship, the Oasis-Class Utopia of the Seas, the “World’s Largest Weekender.” The deployment of Utopia marks the first time Royal Caribbean has used one of its new megaships for short-haul itineraries.

Chances are some new cruise customers will only want to try short cruises. By offering its best equipment for those trips, Royal Caribbean gives itself the best chance of winning over those customers by allowing them to experience its best product.
Short cruises are also ideal for people who want a getaway but don't have much vacation time.
Virgin Voyages is capitalizing on that idea with a special trip.

Virgin Voyages plans a special weekend of sailing
While most weekend cruises depart on a Friday and return on a Monday, Virgin Voyages has planned a two-day weekend trip. The voyage on the cruise line's newest ship, Resilient Lady, departs Miami on Saturday, November 23 and returns on Monday, November 25.
Virgin Voyages promotes it as a vacation that doesn't require PTO (although you should probably plan to be late for work on Monday, given the traffic in Miami).
Much like Royal Caribbean's efforts to impress new cruise passengers with Utopia of the Seas, Virgin Voyages is also putting its best foot forward.
“This isn't just any cruise; it's a music-fueled weekend designed for cruisers to experience the best of our award-winning entertainment and nightlife, including a festival-style program of immersive activities, special programming and an additional special guest,” the cruise line says on its website.
“With a full day at sea to soak up the sun and explore the ship, you can spend an evening dancing under the stars while internationally renowned DJ Sam Feldt spins an epic poolside set.”

Sailors—as Virgin Voyages calls its passengers—staying in the “RockStar” and “Mega RockStar” suites will enjoy additional music.
“Feldt will host a private rooftop sunset with Richard, followed by an exclusive meet-and-greet on the first evening,” the cruise line added.
