The guest of the night by Hildur Knutsdottir
Anyone who lives with a chronic, hard-to-diagnose illness and has endured the demoralizing process of trying to get the right treatment can tell you that it is a nightmare at times. Standing up for yourself, fighting to be taken seriously – it is something I have dealt with most of my life as a person with autoimmune diseases. So when I read the description of Hildur Knútsdóttir's psychological horror novel, amazon;elmt:;cpos:1;pos:1″ href=”https://shopping.yahoo.com/rdlw?merchantId=66ea567a-c987-4c2e-a2ff-02904efde6ea&siteId=us-engadget&pageId=1p-autolink&featureId=text-link&merchantName=amazon&custData=eyJzb3VyY2VOYW1lIjoiV2ViLURlc2t0b3AtVmVyaXpvbiIsImxhbmRpbmdVcmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5hbWF6b24uY29tL05pZ2h0LUd1ZXN0LUhpbGR1ci1LbnV0c2RvdHRpci9kcC8xMjUwMzIyMDQ5P3RhZz1nZGd0MGMtMjAiLCJjb250ZW50VXVpZCI6IjA3ZGJiYjYzLTQzZDEtNDhjZC1hNGIzLTUyOTgxYTA1ZmZmOCIsIm9yaWdpbmFsVXJsIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYW1hem9uLmNvbS9OaWdodC1HdWVzdC1IaWxkdXItS251dHNkb3R0aXIvZHAvMTI1MDMyMjA0OSIsImR5bmFtaWNDZW50cmFsVHJhY2tpbmdJZCI6dHJ1ZSwic2l0ZUlkIjoidXMtZW5nYWRnZXQiLCJwYWdlSWQiOiIxcC1hdXRvbGluayIsImZlYXR1cmVJZCI6InRleHQtbGluayJ9&signature=AQAAAQQ2me5CJrO7XAgNU3IYXx1AG350nd8efVATgfJI7wZD&gcReferrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FNight-Guest-Hildur-Knutsdottir%2Fdp%2F1250322049″ class=”link rapid-with-clickid etailiffa-link” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank” data-ylk=”slk:The Night Guest;elm:affiliate_link;sellerN:amazon;elmt:;cpos:1;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas”>The guest of the nightIt resonated with me immediately:
Iðunn is at another doctor’s office. She knows her constant fatigue is a sign that something is wrong, but the doctors ignore her symptoms and blood tests have not revealed any cause. When she talks to her friends and family about it, the response is the same: have you tried eating better? Have you exercised more? Have you established a nighttime routine? She tries to follow their advice and buys everything from vitamins and sleeping pills to a step counter. Nothing works. Until one night Iðunn falls asleep with the watch on and wakes up to find that she has walked more than 40,000 steps in the night… What happens when she is asleep?
The guest of the night It's a short, engaging read that puts a disturbing spin on a topic that many people can relate to. I practically devoured it.
Is Earth an exceptional place? The search for cosmic life by Mario Livio and Jack Szostak
The origin of life and the question of whether it exists elsewhere is a topic that I find endlessly interesting (as evidenced by the frequency with which books on the topic appear among these recommendations). The Quest for Cosmic Life;elm:affiliate_link;sellerN:amazon;elmt:;cpos:2;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas”>Is Earth an exceptional place? The search for cosmic lifeAstrophysicist Mario Livio and Nobel Prize-winning biologist Jack Szostak examine what we know about the things that make life possible—the building blocks of life—and explore how they could have arisen on Earth and, hypothetically, elsewhere. At the heart of the mystery is the still-unanswered question of whether or not life arose as a result of a freak accident.
As the authors write in their introduction, “Even with the enormous scientific progress we have witnessed in recent decades, we still do not know whether life is an extremely rare chemical accident, in which case we might be alone in our galaxy, or a chemical inevitability, potentially making us part of a vast galactic ensemble.”

The planet has been devastated by natural disasters and species have died off en masse. In search of anything that might help improve the global situation, a team of climate scientists from the Scientific Institute for Ecology and Nascent Worlds (SINEW) venture out to explore what appears to be a completely new environment that has sprung up out of nowhere near their camp in the Australian outback. But they are not prepared for what they find.
Towards non-being is a thrilling new science fiction series that weaves together cosmic horror. The first issue came out in early summer and part one just wrapped up this week with issue four. If you liked it The reign of the scavengers either The Southern Reach Trilogy, You will probably enjoy it Towards non-being. The art alone will captivate you.
