x is currently banned in Brazil following an order from a Supreme Court judge, and Brazilian users appear to be flocking to Bluesky, an alternative social network.
“Brazil, you are setting new all-time highs for activity on Bluesky!”, official Bluesky account says in a post.
“There will almost certainly be some outages and performance issues,” Bluesky developer said Paul Frazee says“We have never seen traffic like this. Stay with us!”
The Bluesky app looks and works very similar to x, but it is a decentralized social media platform that is based on the AT protocol (which was also developed by Bluesky). a post at 5:12 pm ETFrazee says Bluesky is seeing 1,000 events per second, a “new milestone,” in its “relay”, which essentially functions as a data hose for the platform.
Mastodon (another decentralized platform) and Meta (the corporation that runs Threads, which has ties to the fediverse) did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether they are also seeing increased usage.
